About Cate Black

Cate founded the practice in 2018, after a decade of professional experience working for architects and builders. By way of residences and small businesses, her work can be found throughout Galveston, Bolivar, and further inland on the mainland and in Houston. She has designed over 75 homes; including new builds, addition/renovation work, and historic renovations and additions. Her houses have been featured in a variety of publications and media. In addition to residential work, she has also assisted local small businesses and nonprofits with their build-outs, renovations, and permitting.

Cate is heavily invested in her community, and has volunteered with a variety of organizations. Most notably, she is the current President of the Board of Directors for BUILD Galveston; she served as a commissioner on the City of Galveston Planning Commission from 2016-2020 (vice chair in 2019, chair in 2020); sat on the Texas Society of Architects Convention Futures Committee from 2016-2019; and founded, managed, and sat on the board for Galveston’s Own Farmers Market from 2012-2016.

Cate moved to the island in early 2011 and continues to call Galveston home with her two amazing children. She does her best to enjoy all that island life has to offer, and continues to work on accepting that sand will always be in their house.
